    Best Sleep Positions for Arthritis

There is no single best sleep position for all people. For people with arthritis, the best sleep position depends on which joints are involved. There are certain positions that are best for most people with particular kinds of arthritis.

    Position 1

If you have arthritis but your knees and hips are unaffected, a good sleep position might be on your side with one pillow for your head and another tucked between your knees.

    Position 2

If you have hip or knee problems, you want your knees straight and the hips not rotated to the side. The best position for you may be on your back with a small pillow under your ankles.

    Position 3

If you have back problems, sleep on your side with your knees bent. Place one pillow between your knees and another under the upper arm to reduce stress on the shoulder joint.

    Position 4

If you have ankylosing spondylitis, a form of arthritis that affects primarily the spine, you may be able to help prevent deformity and loss of mobility by sleeping on your stomach.

    Position 5

Those with ankylosing spondylitis might also try sleeping on their backs. Try using no pillow at all, except perhaps for a small one between your shoulder blades.
